Iowa DOT Safety Impact Dashboard Development

Iowa
Traffic safety projects can produce varying impacts on safety performance. While some projects substantially reduce crashes, others may yield limited or unexpected measurable effects. Establishing a robust framework for tracking crash histories associated with safety projects is therefore essential for the Iowa DOT and other state DOTs to assess project effectiveness, efficiency, return on investment, and broader safety performance implications.

Minnesota Comprehensive Roundabout Study

Minnesota
HDR helped MnDOT to study the safety performance of roundabouts in Minnesota. A unique aspect of this study was the evaluation of various roundabout features (such as number of legs, circulating lanes, radius, curvature, signing, etc.). The poster highlights the findings from this study.

Minnesota Evaluations for Rest in Red and Advance Warning Flashers

Minnesota
On an MnDOT-funded project, HDR and HSRC evaluated traffic safety strategies in Minnesota. The analysis results found statistically significant safety effectiveness for both Rest-in-Red overnight signal operations in Ramsey County and advance warning flashers at signalized intersections statewide.

Advancing HSIP Effectiveness: Findings from the FHWA National Scan Tour

FHWA
FHWA conducted an HSIP National Scan Tour of six states. It showcased noteworthy practices, data-driven strategies, and challenges in safety planning, programming and evaluation, offering actionable insights to improve decision-making and advance safety goals.

Analysis of the Safety Effectiveness of Rear-End Collision Avoidance ADAS

FHWA
This study analyzed the safety effectiveness of FCW (forward collision warning) and CIB (crash imminent braking) ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) systems based on large-scale, police-reported crash data combined with decoded VINs of crash vehicles. The QIE and logistic regression were adopted to measure and compare the reduction of rear-end striking across driver and vehicle groups.

Deployment and Safety Evaluation of Variable Speed Limits on I-70

Colorado
Deployment and evaluation of a Variable Speed Limit (VSL) algorithm on I-70 in Colorado. The flow-, weather-, queue-, and transition-based algorithm adjusts speeds in real time. An Empirical Bayes before-after evaluation found approximately 30% reductions in crash frequency and severity.
