Orange Blossom Trail Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Florida
An $8.7m pedestrian safety project along 1.1 mi of a six-lane arterial in Orlando. Upgrades included raised mid-block crossings, pedestrian hybrid beacons, in-pavement lights, lighting, median fencing, and realigning bus stops with the crosswalks. Only one pedestrian fatality in the four years since completion.

Innovative Rail Crossing and Intersection Safety Improvement

Florida
A highly innovative design utilizing a pear-shaped roundabout to replace three traffic signals and seven rail-gated crossing lanes in a physically constrained area. This $9.5m project located in a community with high numbers of below-poverty residents also added improved pedestrian facilities.

Integrated Pavement Friction Management & Safety Performance Framework

Illinois
This project develops an integrated, network-level pavement friction management framework for Illinois. It transforms friction, traffic, and pavement characteristics into crash-risk measures and integrates them with life-cycle cost analysis to support proactive pavement management decisions.

Iowa DOT Safety Impact Dashboard Development

Iowa
Traffic safety projects can produce varying impacts on safety performance. While some projects substantially reduce crashes, others may yield limited or unexpected measurable effects. Establishing a robust framework for tracking crash histories associated with safety projects is therefore essential for the Iowa DOT and other state DOTs to assess project effectiveness, efficiency, return on investment, and broader safety performance implications.

Minnesota Comprehensive Roundabout Study

Minnesota
HDR helped MnDOT to study the safety performance of roundabouts in Minnesota. A unique aspect of this study was the evaluation of various roundabout features (such as number of legs, circulating lanes, radius, curvature, signing, etc.). The poster highlights the findings from this study.

Rear-End Collision Prevention Function in Signalized intersection

Maryland
Study (pre-deployment assessment) aimed to mitigate rear-end collision risks at signalized intersections utilizing advanced lane-based, wide-range detection sensors extending Dynamic All Red Extension to optimizing the green termination time.

Nebraska’s Interstate Cable Median Barrier Success

Nebraska
Nebraska implemented cable median barrier on a few segments of Interstate 80. We have observed a reduction in fatalities and serious injuries from cross-over median crashes. The poster will also include cable median barrier strike and repair stats to show the maintenance perspective with safety.

Minnesota Evaluations for Rest in Red and Advance Warning Flashers

Minnesota
On an MnDOT-funded project, HDR and HSRC evaluated traffic safety strategies in Minnesota. The analysis results found statistically significant safety effectiveness for both Rest-in-Red overnight signal operations in Ramsey County and advance warning flashers at signalized intersections statewide.

Advancing HSIP Effectiveness: Findings from the FHWA National Scan Tour

FHWA
FHWA conducted an HSIP National Scan Tour of six states. It showcased noteworthy practices, data-driven strategies, and challenges in safety planning, programming and evaluation, offering actionable insights to improve decision-making and advance safety goals.

Analysis of the Safety Effectiveness of Rear-End Collision Avoidance ADAS

FHWA
This study analyzed the safety effectiveness of FCW (forward collision warning) and CIB (crash imminent braking) ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) systems based on large-scale, police-reported crash data combined with decoded VINs of crash vehicles. The QIE and logistic regression were adopted to measure and compare the reduction of rear-end striking across driver and vehicle groups.
