Video Sharing Enhances Safety Across Texas

TxDOT's video sharing platform streams real-time video from 3,000 traffic cameras to department staff, first responders, and other partners, allowing them to respond to emergency events while minimizing congestion and secondary crashes.
The nighttime fatality rate on the nation's roadways is three times higher than the daytime rate, and 76% of pedestrian fatalities occur at night. FHWA offers tools including safety countermeasures, updated and new approaches for lighting design and traffic control devices.
CTDOT uses several strategies to combat wrong-way driving, including behavioral countermeasures, a public awareness campaign, traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, and delineators.
UDOT is addressing safety and mobility at traffic signals for all road users, including snow buildup in traffic signal LEDs, wrong-way driving countermeasures, and accessible pedestrian signals. Automated performance measures allow for full situational awareness, even for vulnerable road users.
Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Increases Safety for First Responders in Texas

TxDOT is incorporating safety into project development through various policies, programs, strategies, methods, and guidelines. For example, the TSAP manual and Safer By Design tools are newer resources to help TxDOT employees incorporate safety into all they do.
When all-way stop control (AWSC) was applied as a systemic safety improvement in rural areas of New Hampshire, total crashes reduced by 71%; 90% in injury crashes, and 75% in fatal crashes.
North Dakota Highway Patrol and North Dakota DOT studied crash risk and travel disruption due to severe winter storms through a Safe System lens. They found several proactive opportunities for safe truck mobility during winter storm events.
