Four autonomous electric shuttles are in service at Honolulu’s international airport. HIDOT launched the 18-month pilot project to study the shuttles’ potential to increase efficiency, promote sustainability, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. HIDOT is also exploring safety benefits of vehicles equipped with automated systems. Previously, HIDOT launched an autonomous shuttle service at the University of Hawaii Mānoa and is transitioning its fleet of vehicles to electric vehicles by 2035.
